Bash Compactor: Easy Come, Easy Go

At the 'Instant' exhibition at Robert Goff Gallery

By Gerry Visco for NEW YORK PRESS

Why do men having an orgasm look like they’re about to croak? That’s what I discovered perusing the Instant exhibition at the
Robert Goff Gallery last week presented by The Fearless Project art collective. Pasted upon the walls, lined with construction paper and wild colorful graffiti, were 80 Polaroids of men taken while they were about to bust. I get the feeling a lot of them were flying solo. Of course, faces look far better post-climax—afterglow is better and cheaper than a facelift.
The gallery was Meatpackingindustrial chic and filled with familiar faces from the arts, fashion and music worlds. While I enjoyed the concept of the art, I would have preferred for variety’s sake including some women, trannies, chubbies, seniors and a taxi driver or two, but the faces were mostly young, male and white. High fives for gay lib, but true rebels need diversity.
“I want you to meet a very talented photographer,” art curator Robert Greco told me, dragging over Diego Garon, whose work was in the show. Japanese artist Naruki Kukita was running around snapping photos of everyone, as was Baschti Pollin, the paparazzo from the website Suck It Boy.
Upon arriving, I bumped into the energetic half-naked gyrations of Gio Black Peter, premiering a new song and a fetching pair of American flag boxer briefs in the middle of the gallery. “Gio, do one of your handstands,” I urged. “No, I don’t feel like it,” he said, a crowd forming around him. “I’d rather do some pushups on top of you.” Afterglow here I come.

My Favorite Duo Photo Team
with a new show
new images

Luigi&Luca present the central aspect of their work in the exhibition: -Re ad presentare- (the entymology of the word represenation). These images on the borderline of fashion and art present their relationship as a stage where the artistic duo understand the world and reality through the act of shaping it. This re-presentation reflects an idea rather than reality itself by describing the signs that Luigi&Luca reorder through digital manipulation and the mise en scene of themselves.

Art 41 Basel: The Premier International Art Show

This year, the 41st edition of Art Basel takes place in Basel, Switzerland, from June 16 through June 20, 2010. As the world’s premier art show, Art Basel marks the annual summer reunion of the international artworld, hosted by the city of Basel, which has been a cultural capital for centuries.

More than 300 galleries from 36 countries on six continents will show works by over 2,500 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Furthermore, our exhibitors will present major works in the Art Unlimited sector, featuring more than 60 ambitious projects, and in the Art Public sector on Messeplatz.

A special event at Art 41 Basel will be the Art Parcours program, which will transform a variety of locations throughout Basel with site-specific artworks and performances. Complimenting Art Basel’s extensive offerings, the city’s museums and institutions once again feature fascinating exhibitions, with a particularly strong focus this year on stars of the recent decades, such as Matthew Barney, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Rodney Graham and Gabriel Orozco.
Founded by a group of local gallerists, the first Art Basel took place in 1970 and the event has long ranked as the most prestigious art show worldwide. The show regularly attracts some 60,000 artists, collectors, gallerists, museum directors, curators, and art enthusiasts, all drawn by both the quality and diversity of the artworks exhibited. Art 41 Basel will showcase every form of artistic expression, including paintings, drawings, editions, sculptures, installations, photography, performances, and video art. Inexpensive works by emerging artists will be on display alongside museum-quality masterpieces priced in the millions.

More than 300 of the world’s leading galleries will exhibit at Art Basel, selected from more than 1,100 applicants by the Art Basel Committee, an international jury of renowned gallerists. These include 72 galleries from the United States; 53 from Germany; 32 from Switzerland; 27 from both France and Great Britain; 20 from Italy; 8 each from Belgium and Spain; 7 from Austria; 6 from Japan; 5 from India; 4 from Brazil; 3 each from China, Mexico and the Netherlands; 2 from Canada, Denmark, Norway and Poland; and one from Argentina, Australia, Colombia, Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, South Korea, South Africa, Sweden, and Turkey. Gerry Visco Cocktail Hour at Dixon Place

Welcome to the FABULOUS world of Gerry Visco! You are invited to the Gerry Visco Cocktail Hour. Well, OK: it's actually a few hours but, as you know, I have no sense of time and after a couple of drinks, who cares?

I'm counting on each and every one of you to come by this Saturday and say hi and pay me back for all those favors I've done for you. If you owe me money, it's OK, you can pay me back next time.

I will make sure you laugh, have some drinks, and meet other oddball friends of mine. Some of them - YOU, me, and others - will be providing entertainment. If you are in the mood to read something, sing, do a little dance, come in costume, or just be your boring old self, GREAT. Bring friends. Look, you're probably out downtown Saturday night, anyway - so how hard would it be to stop by and say HELLO?

Try my own cocktail invention: The BIPOLAR: gin, tonic, Tabasco sauce, and a sliver of jalapeno. Keeps you young and clears your throat.
