Top talent and casting agency, VPE: Vinnie Potestivo Entertainment, is currently casting The Fire Island Summer Project, a new reality series that will follow a group of young gay men, and the people who love them, living in a beach house in New York’s hottest summer destination, Fire Island. The series will film during summer of 2012.
And, yes, despite last Monday night's devastating fire in The Pines, the show will go on! "Fire Island business owners are giving us the cue that their businesses will be rebuilt by the start of the season," say's VPE President and casting director, Vinne Potestivo. "We are working with event organizers hand in hand as events revolving around raising funds for Fire Island Repair are being prepared. What better time to show a community pull together than now?"
The Fire Island Summer Project is being produced by World of Wonder, the team that has produced some of the most fun, addictive reality TV shows ever including Being Chaz, Tori & Dean: Inn Love, Million Dollar Listing, Pam Anderson: Girl on the Loose and the ratings monster, RuPaul’s Drag Race.
If you are available to live on Fire Island this summer, have an amazing story to share, and have a dynamic personality, then head over to NYC's BAR-TINI on November 19 for an open casting call! Curious to know more? We sat down with hottie casting director and VPE president, Vinne Potestivo to get the T on The Fire Island Summer Project to ask crucially important questions like: Do I have to live in NYC to be considered? Cherry Grove or The Pines? Cameras in the Meatrack? Girls allowed?
I'd like to think there is room for more than one show about gay culture. I think we need more programming focusing on sub-cultures within the LGBTQ community. We don't need "broader casts," we need more networks that are willing to take risks.
Regarding the cast of "fabulous gay guys," people always tell me to make sure I cast this kind of guy or that kind of girl. The truth is, you can only tell the story of those who are interested in participating, so this is our story to tell.
How do you feel about introducing a predominantly gay cast on mainstream television?
I'm ecstatic! This is an important story to tell and I'm thrilled to be able to help assemble a cast of interesting and unique individuals and be able to tell their story. After all, that's what this project is about - telling a genuine story, not reinforcing a stereotype.
The Pines or Cherry Grove?
As of now, it looks like our house will be the Pines.
Will your boys be, uh, shooting in the Meat Rack?
[laughs] uhhhhh. What's the Meat Rack?! Good grief, maybe I have a thing or two to learn from our cast....
I’m picturing a house of flawless Ken doll gym gods, but I’m just a furry little fireplug keepin’ it real. Do I have a shot?
OMGosh, absolutely! I truly want to make sure we're telling a collective story, which is why we've opened up the casting nationwide. Our casting application is intentionally online so everyone can sign up! This is a very broad casting, which always delivers exciting results that are usually hard to narrow down!!!
Do I have to live in New York to be on the show?
Not at all! This is a nationwide casting. You can submit (from the comfort of your own home!) on www.fireislandcasting.com We’re going to provide the summerhouse, you just need to provide the audition video!
Any (real) girls on the show?
YES YES YES! Absolutely. I'm really curious to see who responds to this casting opportunity, and why? There are so many different ways to cast this, and I want to ensure everyone has a voice here. My best friend is a female, and I could only imagine how much fun it'd be to showcase our relationship on national TV, but alas, I’m a bit out of the "younger demo" for something like this. This is definitely a show I'd have considered participating in when I was younger.
Any straight (really) boys on the show? Can they apply?
I have a ton of straight friends who hang with me at gay bars in NYC, so why wouldn't we want to include them in the fun?! As we say on our casting flyer, we're looking for gay men–and the people who love them!
Come to the casting this Saturday or apply online. The more guys--who apply the better the show will be! Fire Island Summer Project
